Elena Ștefoi was born in a Moldavian village. She left it and went to school in a small Moldavian town. From there she went to Bucharest as a journalist. After the fall of communism, she also became Doctor of Philosophy. She then went for a while to Ottawa, where she was Romania's ambassador to Canada. What she always was and is, is a poet.

We are now publishing one of her books of poems, mainly about Canada, entitled A Grammar of the Tower of Babel. The poems have been translated into English by Ana Olos, founder of the Canadian Studies Programme at the University in Baia Mare. They offer the reader the story of a Romanian poet, philosopher and diplomat.
