What is Graphotactics?
In this presentation we go down below the level of the word. We are now at the level of the LETTER.
Graphotactics simply means the 'arrangement of letters' and Joyce was highly interested in it as against phonotactics, 'the arrangement of sounds.' Which is far better known by phoneticians.
By comparison, graphotactics has never been systematically studied. But it is impossible to understand at least segments of Finnegans Wake without paying close attention to it. The order of letters is for Joyce as important as the order of words perhaps even more important.
Next point to remember is that letters just like phonemes do not carry meaning. An individual letter taken separately carries no meaning at all.
But Joyce manages to extract poetry and to make it shine from the idiosyncratic arrangement of individual letters called graphemes.
Hence graphotactics: their arrangement, with Joyce, is as important as phonotactics is with, say, Gerard Manley Hopkins. Attend to that!
This volume contains the preliminary elements of future research in this most difficult field.
