The book we are publishing today, My grief is heavier than the sand of the sea (Translations from old Irish poetry), is part of Margareta Sterian's Archive, entrusted to us by Mircea Barzuca, her legal inheritor. The book first appeared in Romania in the year 1974.
This book comes after Margareta Sterian's paintings, graphic art and decorative works, which we have already published. All these works have the fragility, the grace, the shyness of a lace glove: underneath it, though, the painter's hand has steel fingers and the force of a guillotine.
Life was not Margareta Sterian's best friend. What kept her going was art. She worked incessantly. On those days when creation was slow to visit her, her disciple often wondered why, and she would always reply, "Because the angel is not always with me."
This is a collection of poems about the Celtic world, some dating back to the sixth century. Their translator finds the world "in a grain of sand". Her translations build a world of her own, a world which she can visit without a passport or a visa. Marc Chagall, ten years her senior, did the same: „Seul est mien / Le pays qui se trouve dans mon âme / J'y entre sans passeport / [...] Les habitants vagabondent dans l'air / [...] Ils habitent mon âme.” Both these painters, though very different from each other, have experienced the tragedy of human history in their own lives.
Contemporary Literature Press is trying to help readers, to discover, wrapped in literary history, the soul of a translator whose need to create was her way of not giving in. Margareta Sterian lived with the "angel" of creation on her right shoulder. My grief is heavier than the sand of the sea will make her readers realize that the angel of creation will always be there for each of us—provided we can see it behind the grief.

Volumul pe care îl publicăm acum, Mâhnirea e mai grea decât marea (Tălmăciri din lirica veche a Irlandei) face parte din Arhiva Margaretei Sterian, încredințată nouă de legatarul acesteia, Mircea Barzuca. El a fost tipărit prima oară de Editura Albatros în anul 1974.
Am publicat în ultima vreme picturile, grafica și opera decorativă ale Margaretei Sterian. Ele au delicatețea, grația, discreția unei dantele—o dantelă care îmbracă mâna pictoriței. Acea mână, însă, are degete de oțel și putere de ghilotină.
Ființă încercată de viață la toate vârstele, o singură armă a avut Margareta Sterian: creația. A lucrat neostenit. Zi după zi. În zilele când gândurile nu se închegau, mai tânărul ei discipol se întreba de ce, iar răspunsul ei era mereu același: „Nu întotdeauna îngerul este în spatele meu.”
Interesul traducătoarei pentru poezia veche irlandeză, pentru cum arăta lumea celților de foarte demult, faptul că pictorița redescoperă universul „in a grain of sand”, ne arată un spirit generos. Traducerile uită uneori de original, pentru a urma gândurile traducătoarei, care își creează o lume proprie, o lume pe care o poate vedea fără pașaport, fără interdicții. Cum zicea Marc Chagall, care era cu numai zece ani mai mare decât ea: „Seul est mien / Le pays qui se trouve dans mon âme / J'y entre sans passeport / [...] Les habitants vagabondent dans l'air / [...] Ils habitent mon âme.” Deși foarte diferiți, amândoi pictorii au purtat o istorie grea pe umerii lor.
Readucem o carte la îndemâna acelora care vor să cerceteze istoria literară, precum și istoria adevărată din sufletul acestei traducătoare discrete, dar cu o personalitate care nu s–a dat bătută atâta vreme cât a putut crea. Margareta Sterian a trăit cu „îngerul” creației pe umărul drept. De-a stânga ei, a însoțit–o un discipol credincios.
Mâhnirea e mai grea decât marea este o mână întinsă tuturor celor care vor să se alăture autoarei—a cărei mâhnire nu lipsește din nicuna dintre creațiile ei— pentru ca îngerul creației să meargă mai departe.
