The year 2013 begins for Contemporary Literature Press with an Anthology of poems written by members of the Romanian PEN Club. The selection was made by a veteran of Romanian poetry, Constantin Abăluță. The illustrations belong to a young artist, Cristina Ioana Young. Both poems and illustrations convey the essence of Romanian lyricism during communism and after. It would be difficult to find a more contemporary book than It Might Take Me Years. These poems are the perfect X-ray of what poetry has been in Romania since the 1950’s to this day: a web of confusion, creation and frustration. The careful reader cannot fail to notice a drama of survival in this book: the survival of the intellectual in the dark Orwellian years, as well as his condition now, twenty years after the fall of the Iron Curtain, if a “fall” it was. It might indeed take years to explain what censorship did — or does — to the poet’s mind. One fact appears clearly in this book: in spite of harsh recent history, the Romanian poet has fought bravely for the “dialect of the tribe”. Romanian intellectuals owe him their freedom of the mind, partly at least. We are publishing here poems by 39 poets, all born between the years 1931 and 1967. The texts have been translated by 21 English poets, together with the graduate students of the MA Programme for the Translation of the Contemporary Literary Text, under Bucharest University. This is more than a book: it is a door open into the privacy of minds. The texts published here say just this: “I write, therefore I am.” They may look like picturesque pastimes to the outsider, but they are in fact a Memento of the fight of the Romanian intellectual with the political circumstances of his century.

Publicăm la început de an 2013 prima antologie de poeme scrisă de membrii PEN Clubului român. Selecția poemelor a fost făcută de poetul Constantin Abăluță. Ilustrațiile aparțin Cristinei Ioana Young. Versurile și imaginile la un loc transmit cititorului lirismul românesc specific, reacția scriitorilor antologați la anii comunismului și la ceea ce trăim acum. O carte mai actuală ca It Might Take Me Years / Mi-ar trebui un șir de ani e greu de închipuit. Poemele acestea iau pulsul și fac radiografia derutei creatoare din anii 1950 încoace, dar ele arată cititorului atent și în ce fel a supraviețuit intelectualul român, și cum se mai simte el acum, la douăzeci de ani de la căderea (?) cortinei de fier. Ar fi, într-adevăr, nevoie de un lung șir de ani să explicăm ce a însemnat cenzura și ce s-a mai întâmplat cu ea. Poetul român nu este o specie pe cale de dispariție, în ciuda istoriei recente a României. Așa cum spunea T.S. Eliot, el păstrează vie “limba tribului”. După ce citim aceste versuri, aparent un zbor afară din cotidian, înțelegem cât de mult datorează intelectualul român poeților nației. Poezia a fost, în anii dictaturii comuniste, o evadare a elitei. În acest moment, pentru că evadarea este încă necesară, observăm în volumul de fațăcă ea este un protest la îndemâna tuturor. Vorba unei vechi zicale, “românul e născut poet”. Citind versurile acestor 39 de poeți, născuți între anii 1931 și 1967, intrăm în intimitatea fiecăruia dintre ei. Traducerile aparțin unui grup de 21 de poeți englezi, care au lucrat împreună cu studenții Masteratului pentru Traducerea Textului Literar Contemporan (Universitatea din București). Acolo unde cititorul de limbă engleză poate apreciază pitorescul situației, cititorul român se va simți acasă la el, ca unul care a trăit cot la cot cu poezia, chiar în timp ce viața cotidiană îl ataca din toate direcțiile. Publicăm, așadar, această antologie, ca ghid pentru cititorul străin de România, dar mai ales ca Memento pentru iubitorul de poezie român.
