*

Mihail C. Vlădescu is a completely new name to anybody of today. He belongs to another age: born in 1886, when Eminescu was still around, he died in 1931,  when Hitler was still two years away from power.  Born as a member of the Noica clan, he was simply a quarter-of-a-century-older first cousin of the Philosopher. Their parents were brother and sister.

He had barely managed to finish his law studies at the University of Bucharest when the First World War started; and then, he was an officer in the Romanian Army throughout the war.  He was elected in what perhaps was the very first Parliament of Greater Romania as one of its members.

He kept writing not only throughout the war but also after, making a profession out of it.  And he published his works privately in the five little volumes collected here under the somewhat arbitrary title of Complete Works.

His writings fall into three distinct categories: stories and short tales, and also descriptions of some battles that he had taken part in. These war recollections are either fairly personal jottings down on the spot—The Diary—, or highly theoretical analyses of the decisions and daily doings of the generals above him in the military hierarchy (the text Problemele comandamentului). The plays are worth a discussion apart.

Mihail C. Vlădescu was a complex personality indeed, a new face that The Publishing House for Contemporary Literature has the privilege to present to the Romanian public of today.  The war is so very, very far away—it is true—, but the permanence lies in the tensions and emotions and passions emerging from these five little books...
