Two Great Translators into English
– Leviţchi and Duţescu –
Two Personalities to Remember

George Sandulescu

Dan Duţescu, Leon Leviţchi and George Sandulescu were my teachers in the late sixties. Whenever I think of them, I find myself contemplating the prospects they opened up for me – because I met them at an age, and in a world where my mind needed to find a way.

Translation happens to be what brings Leviţchi, Duţescu and Sandulescu together this time. All three of them are concerned with a Romanian’s grasp of English as a foreign language. Leviţchi was the grammarian. Duţescu was the poet. Sandulescu - the author of this commemorative text - is the one who sees the map of the mind regardless of the language. Together, they have mapped the minds of many Romanian students of English, and their books are still with us, to show us the way.
