George Szirtes is a sensibility which consumes itself. The poet is desperately aware that, when he embraces the woman he loves, something immaterial in her escapes his grasp. His lines are paradoxical spaces of helplessness and victory at once, and his poetry becomes the exquisite, irresistible need to make love to the soul.

In an age that is obsessed with debunking love , stripping it to mere sex, an age that delights in vulgarity and reduces the unutterable to verbal commonplace, George Szirtes' sweet warmth protects the fairy tale.

Much as the poet loves the woman's physicality (his tenderness is ample proof of that), he fails to overcome his despair that he cannot fully join her, he cannot become one with her. The distance between him and his love is his body. Szirtes' love poetry is meta-existential and yet so very earthly...

With Szirtes, a question arises at the end of every new volume: Where does one choose to live? At home (yet away from it)? In the soul? In the body? Body and soul pine for each other's language. You are nowhere at home, after all. Life is frail and essentially frustrating — but its hunger makes it exquisite.
