Four days older than T.S. Eliot, and twelve years younger than Brancusi, Dimitrie Ghiață was born in the kingdom of Romania. He painted under communism as if communism did not exist. He married Aurelia—creator of tapestries that were equally free from any compromise with totalitarian ideology. Communism took hold of Romania in 1944, when they were both, more or less, nel mezzo del camin.
Contemporary Literature Press is publishing four retrospective volumes of their work. These volumes are full of extraordinary paintings and tapestries—miracles of strength and colour. They are images of true Romania: as it was, as it still is.
We are publishing most of their work—as well as documents that betray their life in an indirect way— in order to make a point. Of course, the beauty of their imagination would have been reason enough. Together with it, we hope the reader will grasp the beauty and rectitude of their lives—the elegance of two minds caught in the "nightmare" of history, as James Joyce called it.

Cu patru zile mai mare decât T.S. Eliot și cu doisprezece ani mai tânăr decât Brancusi, Dimitrie Ghiață s–a născut în Regatul României. A pictat sub comunism de parcă nu ar fi existat comunism. S–a însurat cu Aurelia—creatoare de tapiserii la fel de libere de orice compromis cu ideologia totalitarismului. România a căzut sub comunism în anul 1944, când amândoi se aflau nel mezzo del camin.
Contemporary Literature Press publică astăzi 4 volume retrospective despre opera lor. Aceste volume cuprind nenumărate picturi și tapiserii extraordinare—adevărate miracole de forță și culoare. Din ele se desprinde imaginea adevărată a României: așa cum a fost și mai este încă.
Publicăm mare parte din opera lor—împreună cu documente edificatoare pentru viața lor—cu un scop. Desigur, imaginația lor frumoasă ar fi fost un motiv suficient. Sperăm, însă că, pe lângă ea, cititorul va percepe frumusețea și verticalitatea vieții lor—eleganța acestor două inteligențe prizoniere în „coșmarul” istoriei, cum l–a numit James Joyce.
