This 400-page Compendium of English Essays lists thirty-four authors, beginning with Thomas More, who wrote one hundred years before Hamlet, and ending with Anthony Burgess, who wrote a few years before the advent of the Euro, at the turn of the new millennium. It is a book of non-fiction, a guide to both thinking and writing clearly, compiled for students born in former communist countries after the fall of communism. It pleads for sincerity of thinking. It is an attempt at teaching young minds to be honest to themselves. Not to hide behind words.
Compiled by C. George Sandulescu, the volume opens with The Philosophy of Literary Genres: The Essay, and On Spelling. A Sample Essay Written for Teaching Purposes, both written by the compiler. The author takes as chronological point of reference for the listed authors their 25th year of life, which is the moment their opinions are already largely formed.
The ideas in this book belong to the literary, social, political, historical, moral – broadly cultural – fields. The texts have been selected largely because of their strong hold on our 2011 present. These essays outline, in fairly great detail, practically all the ideas that haunt the twenty-first century, and which we are tempted to consider ours alone. Considering that some of the essays in this Compendium may be somewhat hard to grasp, for various reasons, such as the fact that they are too locally British and too remote in time, the Editors envisage for the next few months the publication of the same texts in a largely annotated version.
These four hundred pages are a memento. They are trying to mend what Communism has profoundly damaged: the ability of the human mind to think for itself, and communicate thoughts clearly, briefly and to the point, in a very organized way. In the process, they also reveal that thoughts can become passionate, that thinking is a way of life, a calling that never ends – a true appetizer for the real thinker.

Acest Compendiu de 400 de pagini cuprinde treizeci și patru de autori, începând cu Thomas More, care a scris cu o sută de ani înainte să apară Hamlet, și ajungând până la Anthony Burgess, care a publicat cu doar câțiva ani înainte să se adopte moneda Euro, la începutul mileniului trei. Este un volum care, în mod deliberat, nu se ocupă de roman, pentru că se dorește a fi de fapt un îndreptar dedicat acelora care vor să învețe să gândească și să scrie clar și limpede. Un îndreptar alcătuit în primul rând pentru studenții care s-au născut în fostele țări comuniste după ce Cortina de Fier a căzut. El este un îndemn adresat inteligențelor tinere de a nu se ascunde după idei-șablon ori după limbaje de lemn. Este, în esență, un apel la sinceritate în gândire.
Alcătuit de C. George Sandulescu, volumul se deschide cu eseurile scrise de acesta, Filosofia genurilor literare: Eseul (The Philosophy of Literary Genres: The Essay), și Despre ortografie. Model didactic de eseu (On Spelling. A Sample Essay Written for Teaching Purposes). Autorul ia drept punct de referință, în cronologia autorilor, anul al douăzeci și cincilea din viața fiecăruia dintre ei, pe care îl consideră a fi momentul când personalitatea lor era deja formată.
Gândurile din interiorul acestui volum țin de domeniul literar, social, politic, istoric, moral – pe scurt, de cultură. Rațiunea pentru care am ales aceste texte și nu altele este relevanța lor de netăgăduit pentru anul 2011, în care ne aflăm. Veți găsi aici toate ideile ce caracterizează secolul XXI, idei pe care poate credeați că nu le-a mai gândit nimeni până acum. Dat fiind că nu sunt ușor de înțeles aceste eseuri în toată complexitatea lor, fie pentru că sunt prea ancorate în realitatea britanică ori aparțin unui timp istoric care nu ne mai este familiar, editorii plănuiesc publicarea, în următoarele câteva luni, a unui volum care să cuprindă aceleași texte, de data aceasta amplu comentate.
Aceste patru sute de pagini sunt un memento. Încercăm, cu ajutorul lor, să redresăm ceva ce a fost sistematic distrus de comunism: independența în gândire și exprimarea ei clară, limpede, concisă, la obiect. În plus, mai dezvăluie aceste eseuri faptul că gândirea e o patimă, un mod de viață, o veșnic perfectibilă vocație…
